Kakha Kukava 

 

The Leader of „Free Georgia” Party


K. Kukava was born in 12.07.1976 in Tbilisi. He studied in 171st public school and graduated Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Law (with merit). 

1997-1999 – K. Kukava worked in Georgia Council of Justice as a consultant, farther – asHead of the department.1999-2001 - Assistant of the Head of the State Security Service, the Deputy Head of Section, the Deputy Head of Department.

Since 2001, after retirement from government service, Kukava became busy in private legal practice – The Director of LTD “Sando Consulting”.

In 2004 he was elected as a member of Georgian Parliament and practically immediately leftparliamentary majority in protest against the policy of Saakashvili.

Over years 2004-2008 Kukava was the author of the number of legislative initiatives, including: Girgvliani murder’s investigation commission, lustration, rehabilitation of victimsof repression during Shevardnadze’s government (the las one was adopted by the Parliament).

In fall 2007 Kukava was elected as a Chairman of Parliament's biggest opposition (multiparty) faction - "Democratic Front".

Kukava always strictly critised President Saakashvili, The Minister of Internal Affairs Merabishvili and General Prosecutor Adeishvili. Over the years 2007 to 2009 Kukava was one of the leaders of united opposition and organizer the protests actions against Saakashvili's government.

The regimes of Saakashvili and Ivanishvili periodicallycarried out repressions against Kukava.  November 7, 2007he was arrestedwith other members of the parliament in the TV "Imedi" building, but was soon released;on May 26, 2011 during protest rally was arrested by Special Forces and brutally beaten; was released after a few hours without any official explanations.

In May 2008 Kukava participated in elections for parliament in Gldani (Tbilisi) district and with 36% took second place (the difference with the winner - George Asanidze - 1.7%).

In 2010 he was elected as a member of the City Council of Tbilisi, where periodically (on a rotation basis) served as a faction’s chairman, then as the Head of the Human Rights Commission.

In the same year, with like-minded people together, Kukava established left-wing orientation political party "Free Georgia”. In 2011, on the First Party Congress was elected as a Chairman of the party.
In 2012, after the change of government, Kukava represented virtually the only political force which opposed as a "National Movement", so the "Georgian Dream" too.  In 2015, he was arrested several times over the various protest actions. Later the Court admitted his illegal detention.

In 2013 in Parliament midterm elections Kukava participated as in Nadzaladevi (Tbilisi) District, adopted 17,5% and took second place.

In October of 2016 he participated again in Parliament elections in Gldani (Tbilisi) district, adopted 9.5% and took the third place.

K. Kukava has spouse – Tea Okropiridze and three children.
